With the country swept with unforgiving weather since December due to a distorted polar vortex, Brimson in Minnesota plunged to minus 40 C on Wednesday while Chicago saw its record low of -27 C on Monday.
As dangerously cold as it seems to be, however, it's (fortunately) still a long way from beating the world's lowest temperature record.
"Everybody is interested in extremes -- the hottest, the wettest, the windiest -- so creating a database of professionally verified records is useful in that fact alone," says Randall Cerveny from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Hong Kong (CNN) -- Oscar-nominated Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou has been fined 7.48 million yuan ($1.2 million) for breaching China's one-child policy, authorities say.
A letter sent to Zhang by the family planning bureau of Binhu District of Wuxi City, Jiangsu province in eastern China on Thursday demanded that he pay a penalty for having two "beyond-the-quota" children.
The letter was posted on the district's official account on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging service.
The fine comes after Zhang apologized in an open letter for his "excessive children" in December. He and his wife, Chen Ting, admitted to having two sons and a daughter.

 An expatriate manager at Caverton Helicopters, has reportedly resigned from the company over the unfair treatment of his Nigerian colleagues during the yuletide season, PM News reports.

Surendra Bhagwandass, a Base Maintenance Manager at Caverton Helicopters, a company that has contracts spanning from Shell to Total, said he became frustrated that while he was being well taken care of, Nigerian workers were poorly paid and their salaries were sometimes delayed. He said it was a security breach not to pay people who work for oil companies.
“Shame on you guys,” he told Caverton management in an email distributed to most staff and obtained by a PM News correspondent.

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has ordered the Broadcasting Society of Nigeria (BON) and the Independent Broadcasting Society of Nigeria, IBAN, to lift the ban imposed on all Nigerian artistes registered with the Copyrights Society of Nigeria ( COSON).

BON/IBAN banned the artists late last year after falling out with COSON over royalties of artistes. (Read all about it HERE).

President Goodluck Jonathan has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to resign immediately on the grounds that the letter Sanusi wrote to him on the unremitted $49.8 billion oil revenue to the Federation Account, was leaked to former President Olusegun Obasanjo by the CBN governor.
But Sanusi who has denied leaking the letter to anyone, has refused to resign and informed the president during the heated telephone exchange that he could only be removed by two-thirds of the Senate as required by law.
THISDAY learnt that the president had called Sanusi and accused him of leaking the letter to Obasanjo, which enabled the latter to use it as one of many allegations he levelled against Jonathan in his letter titled: “Before It is Too Late”. ....continue

(CNN) -- A 14-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero in Pakistan for tackling a suicide bomber -- dying at the main gate of his school and saving schoolmates gathered for their morning assembly.
Ninth-grader Aitazaz Hassan Bangash was on his way to the Ibrahimzai School on Monday in the Hangu district of northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when the bomber, dressed in a school uniform, asked him where the school was, the teen's cousin told CNN.
Aitazaz and his cousin, Musadiq Ali Bangash, became suspicious, Musadiq said.
"The other students backed off, but Aitazaz challenged the bomber and tried to catch him. During the scuffle, the bomber panicked and detonated his bomb," he said.
