his underwear into Saudi Arabia, according to official Saudi Press Agency
(SPA).
The Saudi man was stopped at customs on his way back from
the island kingdom of Bahrain on the 16-mile-long King Fahd Causeway linking
the two Gulf countries, according to head of customs Fahad Dhufallah al-Otaibi.
After a search, inspectors detected the bottles of booze
which were attached with adhesive tapes to the man's upper and lower legs and
hidden by the man’s traditional long white robe.
Customs officials became suspicious of the man after
noticing he was walking oddly as he re-entered the Saudi Arabia from Bahrain.
Alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia and as a result there are
tough penalties such as public flogging or long detention for anyone caught
trying to break the law.
Last week, Saudi customs seized two shipments of liquor from
Bahrain, including 415 bottles concealed in various parts of a vehicle and 83l
of liquor hidden inside the fuel tank reserve of a truck.
In October, a British man was caught with homemade wine and
faced public lashing.
Karl Andree, 74, was arrested by Saudi religious police and
spent more than a year in prison. He was spared flogging because of his age and
ill-health.
