Daring gunmen have assassinated a former Chairman of Peremabiri Community Development Committee (CDC), Morris Jonathan, at his residence in Akenpaiarea of Yenagoa, Bayelsa.
The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, Hilary Opara, confirmed the incident.
He stated that that the assailants did not remove any valuable or cash from the deceased’s home during the attack.
"My DPO called me early in the morning to inform me of the murder case," he said.
Mr. Opara added that no arrest had been made by the Police authorities as investigation in the murder was ongoing.
Residents of the area were left bewildered following the murder of the 34 year old civil servant as his wife wailed uncontrollably.
Family sources said Jonathan's remains had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
The deceased hailed from Peremabiri, an oil-bearing area located in Southern Ijaw Local Government area of the state.
An eyewitness who sought anonymity said that the gunmen, numbering about six persons, invaded Jonathan's residence at about 1am, shooting sporadically, before they entered the victim's bedroom and shot him dead.
It was gathered that the gunmen did not remove anything from the home of the former CDC chairman after shooting him.
