KANO (AFP) – Scores of suspected Islamist gunmen stormed a military barracks in northeast Nigeria on Friday, spraying gunfire on the troops inside before torching the compound, the army and residents said.
The military has reportedly deployed fighter jets and ground forces in pursuit of the gunmen, presumed to be Boko Haram Islamists, who have killed thousands in the region during a four-year uprising.
“There was an attack on the military barracks in (the town) of Bama this morning,” said Mohammed Dole, army spokesman in Borno state, the epicentre of the Boko Haram conflict.
He declined to comment on details provided by several Bama residents who said dozens, or perhaps even hundreds, of insurgents swarmed the barracks in a convoy of 4X4 trucks, armed with assault rifles, explosives and rocket-propelled-grenades.
“It started at around three in the morning with huge explosions and the cracking of gunfire,” said Bama resident Abdullahi Idris. “Later we saw plumes of smoke and fire from the barracks.”
Bama has become a flashpoint in the insurgency and the scene of several bold Islamist attacks. One of the Islamist rebels’ largest-ever strikes targeted the military in Bama in June.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted in very strong terms over the 11-page letter purportedly written by his daughter Iyabo Obasanjo and exclusively published by Vanguard yesterday where he was described as a liar, manipulator and a woman beater.

A call was put through to the former president yesterday by the editors of Vanguard to hear his side of the allegations leveled against him by his daughter and the conversation went thus:

DBanj-and-Genevieve-Nnanji

D’banj confessed in an interview months back that if you could pick anyone to get married to, that he would definitely pick Nollywood screen goddess — Genevieve Nnaji.
It seems the entertainer superstar is making plans towards that direction as he was caught with the Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji at the Gulder Club Ultimate party which held on Saturday, December 14th at Oceanview in Victoria Island, Lagos.
They really look good together though, would be magical if they actually settle down together.

After giving seven years of his life as an apprentice to Chief Nwaneri, Nnabugo is left with nothing, not even the settlement allowance he is supposed to receive after serving. He is left with no other alternative than to steal from his boss.

The battle for the final five men and women continues again this week after the week’s voting could not present clear cut last five.
The results that came in were too close to call and there was no definite way the pendulum could swing, either for the final five or the next star to drop from the competition.
It has thus been agreed that the voting will continue for another week to see if there will be clear winners for the final phase of the competition. After the last five emerge the winners will be announced sometime in January.
At this point, the panel has concluded we should suspend publishing the positions of the last contenders for the Sexiest Man and Woman in 2013. The final result will be published in January. But the voting continues non-stop till Wednesday, December 19, 2013. and going by the experience of the game we all know a lot can happen between now and next week. Only your votes can make a difference!
For this reason and more, the names of the last 6 contenders shall be published in alphabetical order with no reference to how they stand in the game.

The five-day warning strike called by the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, took its toll on healthcare services in public hospitals, yesterday, as patients waited long hours without getting attention from doctors who stayed away from their duty posts.
The strike, which took off on a slow pace in most hospitals in Lagos and Ibadan, later became total.

At Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, only senior medical consultants, nurses, ward aides and other ancillary staff were observed attending to patients in the wards and the accident and emergency unit.
The institution’s outpatient clinics, which were open for the day’s business, were devoid of the usual activities.
A hospital source disclosed that contingency measures were in place to cushion effects of the strike.
At the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, attention to patients was later suspended as doctors complied with NMA’s directive.
A similar scenario played out at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja, where dozens of patients that had booked appointments were told to go home after waiting for hours without getting attention.
In a reaction to the development, Chairman NMA, LagosState branch, Dr. Francis Faduyile, said: “It is a full blown strike. This is the first strike called by the NMA in the last 10 years.”
At the UniversityCollegeHospital, Ibadan, several patients, except those on emergency, were turned back and forced to seek alternative medical attention.

ENUGU—Activities at both the Nsukka and Enugu campuses of the University of Nigeria, UNN, were paralysed yesterday as over 1000 members of the university community abandoned their offices and converged on Nsukka campus to protest the suspension of the institution’s Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Emeka Enejere by the Federal Government. They said that they would not open their offices for academic activities until the government brought the council chairman.
The aggrieved workers comprising members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and the Non-Academic Staff of Universities, NASU and National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT, among others, demanded for the immediate reinstatement of Enejere.
