A car bomb has exploded in Maiduguri, and there are fears of many casualties, the BBC reports. The incident occurred today around 1pm outside the state television offices.
Blood-spattered people were seen fleeing and vehicles crashed into each other, while soldiers fired automatic weapons. A suicide bomber is suspected of being behind the blast, reportedly near a market.
The military confirmed to the BBC that an explosion had occurred, but did not give a figure for casualties. An eyewitness said he had seen what appeared to be dead bodies on the ground. A second car is reported to have been set on fire by the blast

Boko Haram, under the leadership of Imam Abubakar Shekau, has claimed responsibility for today's suicide bombing attack in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State.

About seven persons were reported to have been killed.

A security source in Maiduguri has confirmed to SaharaReporters that the military is in receipt of an audio recording in which Shekau claimed responsibility for the deadly explosions in which he also promised more attacks.

Embattled Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, has not returned to Abuja after SaharaReporters broke the news of her certificate scandal, presidency sources said on Tuesday.

They told SaharaReporters the minister informed President Goodluck Jonathan that she was attending to her medical needs in Brazil, following which she apparently left for an undisclosed country.

Mrs. Oduah, who was also embroiled in a BMW purchase scandal prior to the certificate mess, reportedly took off from Nigeria after the report of a presidential panel indicting her for a string of corrupt practices was leaked to her. The panel reportedly went beyond its initial brief to unravel a string of corrupt acts of the minister including how she connived with commercial banks to receive kickbacks for renovation projects initiated at airports across the country.

Callistus Ewelike, a photojournalist with the News Agency of Nigeria & current official photographer of President Jonathan was reportedly shot at close range in front of his house in the Nyanya area of Abuja around 10pm on Monday January 13th.

Callistus, who is attached to the State House, Abuja, was said to be on his way home from work when he was attacked. Sources in the area where it happened said two men, one on a bike and another standing were noticed in front of his house waiting for him. As Callistus made his way into his compound, the man standing by his gate walked up to him and shot him at close range on the neck. Both men fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Callistus was rushed to the National Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

This is the second time the NAN photographer and father or two would be attacked. Gunmen forced their way into his home late last year where they took his camera, laptop and other work tools.

Dorothy Aken'Ova, executive director of the country's International Centre for Reproductive Health and Sexual Rights, said that the legislation, hailed the "Jail the Gays" law, had led to mass arrests. Police in Bauchi state, she claimed, had a list of 168 purportedly gay men, of whom 38 had been arrested.
The laws, she cautioned, will endanger medical programmes combating HIV-Aids in the gay community. Nigeria has the second-largest HIV epidemic globally with an estimated 3.4 million people living with HIV.

According to statistics, 8 out of 10 Nigerian men do not use condoms. This was revealed by Bright Ekweremadu, the Managing Director of Society for Family Health, SFH. He said over 1.8billion sexual activities occur in Nigeria yearly, and 80% of them are unprotected.

Mr Ekweremadu said if Nigerian men were to use condoms, no supplier in the world would be able to afford the quantity of condoms Nigerian men would need. He said their research showed that young Nigerians between 18 and 34 years in the cities of Lagos & Abuja make the highest use of condoms.

He said many sexually active Nigerian men have several excuses for not wanting to use condoms. Excuses like "I am healthy, I dont have infections, flesh to flesh is sweeter" etc...

He said there are so many cases of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies reported yearly because of people's refusal to use condoms. He also said their research shows that the women don't insist on condoms.

A Rivers State senator who was reportedly shot with a rubber bullet and teargas cannisters earlier today  by the Nigerian police in the state is on his way to London for further treatment according to sources in the state.
Senator Magnus Abe was hospitalized earlier today when policemen disrupting a peaceful rally organized by the opposition members in state shot at him with teargas and rubber bullets.
His doctor claimed that the senator’s chest was hit with an object that might have caused internal bleeding therefore necessitating his transfer to the UK for better medical care.
The police in the state however deny that its members shot the Senator, they instead claimed that minimum force was applied in dispersing rally goers at the state’s College of Arts and Sciences because they did not obtain police permit before the gathering. SEE MORE PHOTOS

WARRI — TRAGEDY struck in Effurun, Delta State, yesterday, as a Delta City 14-passenger town service commercial bus caught fire, killing 10 passengers including a pregnant woman.

Four people, including the driver, survived. The bus was heading towards Enerhen Junction.

Vanguard gathered that the bus with number plate 14 C-74 DT burst into flames at about 3.04pm along the ever busy PTI road near Emasodje junction.

The accident caused serious vehicular traffic as officials of the FRSC, military men and Policemen retrieved the burnt corpses.

According to a survivor, who does not want his name mentioned, tragedy struck immediately after a woman with a four-litre jerry can of petrol entered the front seat of the bus against the agitation of the passengers.

He further claimed that the star actress defamed him in an interview she granted City People in 2013, by calling him a ‘half-baked journalist’.
Kelvin’s lawyers, Megafield Solicitors, frowned at Monalisa’s statement in the interview and handed out a legal suit notification to the actress on behalf of their client.
According to Nigeriafilms.com, who contacted Monalisa’s publicist, the actress and her team were aware of the lawsuit.
“Yes, she’s been served and her lawyers are dealing with it appropriately.
“The Kelvin guy is only trying to take advantage of Lisa’s (Monalisa) status and soft hearted nature because he’s got nothing to lose,” the publicist said.

A 21-year-old man, Mansur Tanko, on Friday, burnt himself to death in Jalingo, after a disagreement with his father, Tanko Mijinyawa, over marriage.

The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident and said the Jalingo Division of the police had commenced investigation into the matter.

Tanko, according to a witness, Jibrin Bala, set himself ablaze because his family refused to approve his wedding with a girl, Blessing. The witness told sympathisers that Tanko introduced Blessing to his father as his proposed wife, but the father kicked against the union, describing it as a bad choice.

Members of the Rabboni Centre Ministries in Pretoria, South Africa, under instruction from their pastor, Lesego Daniel, dropped to the floor to eat grass after the 'man of God' told them it will 'bring them closer to God.' (If you missed the first post, see it here)

The church members defended their pastor who has been widely criticized for this practice and said eating grass has not only brought them closer to God but also heals them of illnesses.

'Yes, we eat grass and we're proud of it because it demonstrates that, with God's power, we can do anything,' Rosemary Phetha told South Africa's Times Live.
The 21-year-old law student says she had been battling a sore throat for more than a year, but it was healed after she ate the grass. Doreen Kgatle, 27, of Ga-rankuwa, suffered a stroke two years ago.
'I could not walk but soon after eating the grass, as the pastor had ordered, I started gaining strength and an hour later I could walk again,' said Kgatle.
