He debuted his new duet Go Ahead And Break My Heart with Gwen Stefani with a performance on Monday's episode of The Voice.
And speaking with Extra, Blake Shelton, 39, admitted that at first, the single was simply a way to impress his new girlfriend.
'Originally,
when I started the song... I was only trying to impress her, you know,
just trying to write her a song to get her excited about me,' he said of
the 46-year-old hitmaker.
Blake
continued: 'I sent her the song half-finished and she wrote the other
half of the song, so it's such a 50/50 emotionally-invested thing.'
The
star - who split with wife of four years Miranda Lambert in July -
described the number as 'an honest song just about kind of how we got
started.'
The duo
began dating after they both filed for divorce from their respective
partners, with Gwen announcing her split from husband of 13 years Gavin
Rossdale in August.
Blake also said that Go Ahead And Break My Heart is 'not like anything I think that she and I have ever done before.'
