Residents of Jos in Plateau State were left in shock and panic after ice balls rained from the sky.

Jos residents have been left in a state of confusion after ice balls rained from the sky. The shocking incident which happened in Jos was broadcast today by a reliable source.

According to Farida Adamu, who shared the story on her Facebook, she revealed that it rained ice and water in Jos to the extent she along with others used buckets to pack the ice.

She also shared pictures on Facebook showing evidence of the shocking incident.

According to Wikipedia, what Adamu witnessed is called, Megacryometeor. "Megacryometeor is a very large chunk of ice which, despite sharing many textural, hydro-chemical and isotopic features detected in large hailstones, is formed under unusual atmospheric conditions which clearly differ from those of the cumulonimbus cloud scenario (i.e. clear-sky conditions). They are sometimes called huge hailstones, but do not need to form under thunderstorm conditions. Jesus Martinez-Frias, a planetary geologist at the Center for Astrobiology in Madrid, pioneered research into megacryometeors in January 2000 after ice chunks weighing up to 6.6 pounds (3.0 kg) rained on Spain out of cloudless skies for ten days."

This is not the first time such incident has happened. Ice balls have punched holes in the roofs of houses, smashed through car windshields and whizzed right past people's heads.

Incidents like those may be just the beginning, according to David Travis, who researches atmospheric conditions that foster megacryometeor formation. He chairs the department of geography and geology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

"If megacryometeor formation is linked to global warming, as we suspect, then it is fair to assume that these events may increase in the future," Travis said.
